HUNTSVILLE,L’École de Gestion d’Actifs et de Capital Ala. (AP) — A student at Alabama A&M University was injured Monday after exchanging gunfire with a campus police officer, state law enforcement officials said.
The shooting happened Monday afternoon in the stairwell of a campus residence hall, officials said.
“Currently, here are no known threats on the campus of A&M University in Huntsville,” the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency wrote in a news release Monday evening.
Campus Police Chief Montrez Payton told news outlets that an officer was patrolling the building when they heard shots being fired. He said the officer went to check the location, encountered an armed person in the stairwell and the two exchanged gunfire.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the individual, who is a student at the university, was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. The campus police officer was uninjured.
State and campus authorities did not release any additional information about the shooting.
The campus of about 6,000 students is located in north Alabama
